Moving Company Changed Your Price? We Rescue Last-Minute Moves.
If your moving company just changed your price — or if you are worried it might happen to you — you are not alone. Price switching on moving day is one of the most common complaints in the long distance moving industry and it happens to thousands of families every year. At Direct Relocation Services we have spent over 11 years rescuing customers from exactly this situation.
This is what you need to know — and what to do if it happens to you.
How the Bait and Switch Moving Scam Works
It always starts the same way. A company quotes you a price that seems too good to be true. They are professional on the phone, their website looks legitimate, and they confirm your deposit and moving date without any problems. You feel good about your decision.
Then everything changes.
Days before your move — or worse, on moving day itself with a truck already at your door — the price suddenly doubles. Sometimes it triples. The company claims your inventory was larger than estimated, adds fees that were never mentioned, or simply demands more money before they will load or unload your belongings.
You are told to pay or your things stay on the truck.
This is called bait and switch pricing and it is one of the most documented and reported scams in the moving industry. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration receives thousands of complaints about this practice every single year.
Why This Almost Always Involves a Broker
The vast majority of bait and switch situations involve moving brokers — companies that do not own trucks, do not employ movers, and do not physically handle your belongings. A broker collects your deposit and sells your move to the cheapest carrier they can find. The company that shows up at your door is a completely different company from who you called. They have no obligation to honor the original price, the original terms, or anything else the broker promised you.
By the time you realize what has happened your deposit is gone, your belongings are packed, and you have no leverage.
You can verify whether any moving company is a carrier or broker in seconds at motus.dot.gov. Search their USDOT number and look for two things — Entity Type should say CARRIER and Broker Authority should say NONE. If it says Broker Authority: Active you are dealing with a broker.
Warning Signs You Are Dealing With a Broker
The company could not tell you exactly which truck or driver would handle your move. They asked you to pay your deposit via Zelle, Venmo, ACH bank transfer, or Cash App rather than a credit card. Their FMCSA record shows Broker Authority: Active. They have been in business less than 3 years. The company that showed up on moving day is different from the company you booked with. The price changed significantly after your belongings were loaded.

What to Do If Your Moving Company Changes Your Price
Step 1 — Do not pay the inflated price if you can avoid it. Once you pay you have far less legal recourse.
Step 2 — Document everything. Take photos, screenshots, and written records of your original quote, your contract, and the new demand for payment.
Step 3 — Call Direct Relocation Services immediately at 855-378-3110. We specialize in last-minute rescue moves and we will do everything in our power to help you find a solution.

How to Protect Yourself Before Your Move
The best rescue move is the one you never need. Here is how to protect yourself before booking any moving company.
Always verify carrier status at motus.dot.gov before paying a deposit. Look for Entity Type: CARRIER and Broker Authority: NONE.
Only use companies with at least 3 years of proven experience. Newer companies are far more likely to engage in bait and switch practices.
Never pay a deposit via Zelle, Venmo, ACH, or Cash App. Legitimate carriers accept credit cards for deposits. Credit cards give you fraud protection and dispute rights. Digital payment apps do not.
Get a binding estimate in writing before signing anything. A binding estimate cannot be changed after you sign.
Check reviews across multiple independent platforms — Google, Trustpilot, BBB, and ConsumerAffairs. Look specifically for patterns of price changes at delivery or missing items.
