What is Move For Hunger?
Move For Hunger is a national nonprofit organization that works with moving companies across the country to collect unopened non-perishable food items from customers on moving day and deliver them to local food banks and pantries. Since its founding Move For Hunger has collected millions of pounds of food and delivered millions of meals to families in need across the United States.
The concept is brilliantly simple. When people move they often have pantry items they cannot take with them — canned goods, dry pasta, rice, peanut butter, cereal, and other non-perishables that would otherwise be thrown away or left behind. Instead of letting that food go to waste Move For Hunger trained moving crews collect it, transport it, and donate it directly to local food banks where it feeds families in need.
Why We Joined Move For Hunger
The decision to join Move For Hunger was an easy one for our team.
We are a Fort Lauderdale based long distance moving company and we see firsthand every day how stressful and expensive a major relocation can be for families across Florida and Georgia. We also know that food insecurity is a very real challenge in our community — 1 in 5 children in Florida go to bed hungry each night.
When we learned that our trucks — which are already traveling hundreds and thousands of miles to deliver our customers’ belongings — could also be carrying donated food to families in need, it felt like the most natural thing in the world. How It Works When You Move With Direct Relocation Services
Joining the Move For Hunger program is simple for our customers. Here is how it works:
When you book your move with Direct Relocation Services we will remind you to set aside any unopened non-perishable food items you do not want to take to your new home. On moving day our crew will collect those items, pack them safely, and transport them to our local food bank partner — Life Net 4 Families — in the Fort Lauderdale area.
From there your donations are sorted and delivered to local families in need right here in South Florida.
There is no extra cost, no extra effort, and no special preparation required on your part. Just set aside your food items and our crew will take care of the rest.
What to Donate
Our Move For Hunger crew will gladly collect any of the following unopened non-perishable items:
Canned vegetables, fruits, stews, soups, beans, tuna, and meat. Pasta and pasta sauce. Baby food and formula. Dry beans and rice. Flour and cereal. Oatmeal and juice. Peanut butter and jelly. Crackers and cookies.
Our Local Food Bank Partner — Life Net 4 Families
Based on our Fort Lauderdale location Move For Hunger has recommended we partner with Life Net 4 Families as our local food bank. Life Net 4 Families is a South Florida nonprofit dedicated to fighting food insecurity in our community — and every pound of food we deliver goes directly to families who need it most.
